Summer is upon us now and District One has been real busy, and it looks like August will be the same. This month we will have to start planning for the September State Meeting in Merrill. That event I believe is scheduled for Sept 11th through the 13th of course we always have early birds. Ann Bonser, our co-chair, would like visiting districts to please bring a couple of table flower arrangements, and raffle items are also needed thank you. Tickets for the Saturday evening dinner will be same as last year: $12.50. We would like a head count as soon as possible. You can call or write Patti Northcraft 541-723-5421 or write PO Box 186, Malin, Oregon 97632
From what I have heard the state meetings are down in attendance on account of the gas prices. Even the Jamboree in Burns was down a bit, but the ones that did make it from here, said they sure had a good time. They tell me that Judy McGarvey was elected vice president at Burns. Congratulations Judy, and that goes to all the new elected officers for this year. Also a big thank you for all the officers that put in so much work in behalf of the Old Time Fiddlers in the past year.
We would like to welcome some new members as of today, Sunday, at our regular meeting and jam at the Shasta Community center. Bob and Maria Laurin, Bob is a good guitar player, we could see that today. Another guitar player and very good singer also by the name of Lowell Weatherford; we didn’t get to meet his wife Jeri, yet. Lowell came and sat in today, and ended up joining right in with the rest of us. The club has been quite busy this past week with several gigs — sometimes two a day. Several members went to Malin to ride a horse-drawn float in the Parade. We got third place there and won $25 and a big ribbon. Thank you, John Northcraft, for setting all that up. Then it was off to the Malin Car Show at the park. A few of us took in the Macken family reunion and it was a big success right after the Farmers Market. What a weekend; got tired fingers.
We would like to wish a happy birthday to the following; Jerry Ruddock, Helen Meyers, Vergil Schmoe, Carrol Fulbright, Lowel Weatherford, and I’m going to try once again to get Jackie Schmoe’s birthday in right, it was for the month of May. Sorry about that Jackie.
Anniversaries for August will be Jackie and Vergil Schmoe.

September
7 Jam Pine Forest Grange, Bend 12:30 p.m.
Our last jam was July 6 at the VFW in Redmond. It was a holiday weekend, but we had a good turnout. Everyone attending enjoyed the music and dancing. We had one visitor, Peggy Hudson from District 4. She made a good addition to our jam.
Welcome to new members: Ben and Judy Bennett and John and Bobbie Salmons, all from Bend.
Our next jam is August 3 at the VFW in Redmond from 1– 4 p.m.. We have also been asked to play at the Deschutes County Fair on August 3 from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
Bob Says:
“If you will remember, last month, I reported to you that District 3 members had voted to terminate their jams at the VFW Hall at Redmond as of August 3. This is true, we will be moving to the Pine Forest Grange Hall in Bend starting September 7, still on the first Sunday of each month as in the past. The only change will be, we start our jam at 12:30 p.m. instead of 1:00 o’clock, this is necessary to avoid any conflict with another group that has the hall at 4:30 p.m. Actually, as we will be going into the fall and winter months it might be better as it will allow us to get through earlier.
I might remind District 3 members that on September 11– 13 in Merrill, OR, there will be a general membership meeting as well as an executive board meeting. There will be some important business to be voted on so I urge all members that can to attend. This will definitely affect all districts.
In the absence of any business meeting, I urge all members to read District 3 news in the Hoedowner so you will be informed of all the happening of the district.”
May God bless those who are sick or have lost loved ones.
Happy Birthday/Anniversary to all this month.

3 back on nursing homes schedule!
July was a busy month for District 5, with many play dates in parks, a monthly jam, a performance at NACO in Florence, and the Coos County Fair in Myrtle Point. One of the highlights was an afternoon when a dozen of us played at the community of Allegany, up the river from Coos Bay.
The song theme for the Winchester Bay Campout this year will be “Sun, Moon or Stars.” Hope to see you there.
By press time, we had received one application for a scholarship to a music camp. We have some youngsters who are doing great on their fiddles.
We hope all those having August birthdays and anniversaries celebrate in the manner they wish, and that all your gardens and orchards produce bountiful crops!

A good group of OOTFA musicians made the trip to Weiser. Since Oregon was host state this year, OOTFA opened each night’s show. Lots of fun! We’re justly proud of District 8 fiddlers. Gayle Clarity placed first in Sr. Sr.; Les Tucker was third. Trevor Whittaker missed fifth place by one point. Chris Lang won best costume in certified contest. And congratulations to all of the other OOTFA kids and adults who entered the contest.
We played at Thousand Trails Campground at Pacific City on Saturday night and the Aurora Strawberry Festival the following day, where we had the biggest crowd ever. Maybe it was the strawberry shortcake that brought them, but they stayed to listen as 23 musicians played.
A week later a group of us played for a wedding in Aurora. The temperature was 100 degrees in the shade, and we were mighty thankful for the shade! We earned $150 for the district that day.
July 3rd a small group played at a nursing home Barbecue and were paid $100 for the district. We had lunch too! Another group played in Woodburn and earned $40 plus a nice lunch.
Ted Hunt donated a banjo which will be raffled off in the future. Thanks Ted! This plus the small gigs we do will help pay the rent this winter.
Al Faucett Days at Silver Falls State Park was July 11-12. Saturday, 15 musicians were signed up to play. Sunday, we had 17 musicians. Some camped at the park and some drove in for the day. The weather was very pleasant, a bit cooler than the 90 plus degrees in the valley. Great audiences for the two days we played. And they were generous with donations too! Our donation jar netted $135 for the district. The park people gave us a nice lunch each day.
We will have played for the Caterpillar enthusiasts at Antique Powerland in late July.
August is fair time. We play at the Polk County Fair on Thursday, August 7th from 1:30 to 3 p.m. This is Senior Day.
Saturday, August 9th we’re invited to play at the River Fair Celebration in Keizer from 11am to noon on the amphitheater stage. Keizer Rapids Park is at the end of Chemawa Road, one mile west of River Road. There will be food and craft vendors, various community booths and demonstrations.
Tuesday, August 19th is our annual outdoor concert at the Benedictine Nursing Home. We’ll start at 6 p.m. Most of us go out to eat afterward.
In October, we’re invited to play at the French Prairie Gardens on three Saturdays. We’ll be paid $100 each day. More details later.
Hope you’re all enjoying the not-so-lazy, hazy, HOT days of summer.
