I think I can speak for all OOTFA members: CONGRATULATIONS!  If I remember correctly, Fay and Isom were instrumental in forming the first OOTFA. That was long before I joined,   so hope that bit of information is correct. District officers for the next year will be: chairman,  John Northcraft; cochairman, Marlon Jannuzzi; secretary and treasurer, Bud Ullman, and the Hoedowner reporter will be The News yours truly,  Johnny Rodgers. We have three new members,  John Northcraft informs me.  They are:  Jerry Ross from Macdoel, California,; Dean Oliver of Chiloquin, Oregon;  And Stella Kallianis from Keno,  Oregon.  I hope the spelling is correct and locations. We won’t be having a jam on the 4th of July – too many other activities going on, I guess. Next jam will be Aug 1, and next business meeting will be July 13, in the Lake County Senior Center at 7 p.m., sharp. Be there or be square, daddyo. The only bright spot on the horizon for district 1E is the annual New Pine Creek Fireman’s BBQ on July 19 this year. We play from 1 o’clock until the crowd thins out. Usually we have members of District 1 come over from the Klamath Falls area to help us out, and hopefully you’ll continue to do so. We really appreciate your help with this one. Wouldn’t be nearly as fun without you. We have a “tentative” play date on the 25th of July at the world famous Paisley Mosquito Festival. Call Rosa Lee McLain @ 541-947-2903 or Larry McLain @ 541-947-2448 a little closer to the date, and they should have more information by then. We usually set up and play outside the school around 11:30 and play for the folks eating under the trees. Again, we’ll play ( if we get the gig that is!) until the crowd disperses. We’d like to wish happy birthday to Rosa Lee McLain on the 23rd of June and Shorty Stone on the 29th of June. Perry Forga will gain a year on the 9th of July, Doug McLain’s birthdate is the 12th of July and Donna Lynch on the  29th. Donna just recently lost her husband Clyde and the fiddlers from 1E played for his funeral on the 18th. We’ll sure miss Clyde and his wonderful sense of humor. Hope he’s now “ridin’ down the canyon” and “walkin’ the dog” I’ll leave you with a probably not very politically correct (what me worry?) question and answer this month. Q: What do god and Obama have in common? A:  No birth certificate! See you next month, same time, same station. Unless of course my joke gets me fired. The schedules for June and July were passed out. If you missed getting one, it’s on our website or you can call one of the officers. We really need musicians for Grants Pass gigs this summer. We received a nice thank you for playing for the dinner at St. Vincent De Paul for the needy and homeless – over 200 people served. We have three new members: Ron (Marilyn) Bolstad – guitar, Sally Martin – beginning fiddle, and Sara Mathews – beginning fiddle. Welcome folks! Joe Corder (wife Delsa plays the piano) has been very sick, but is recovering slowly. Stan Rogge has been battling serious health problems – our thoughts and prayers go out to him and Dorothy — and they welcome phone calls. Our new high school guitar player lost a fight with a cat on his bicycle and broke his (right) thumb. Wishing you all well. Scholarships for musicians are available. Contact a district officer for an application. Our relationship with Trillium Community Health plan is progressing very favorably.  A donation to the  Willamette Valley Fiddle Contest was approved. What a treat to have Bob Hanson, Guy Kinman, and Hal Thompson from Roseburg visit this month! One listener commented on the “great concert” at the end of the circle jam as they played our requests. It was fun to have Hal Weiner visit and help us out at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club Benefit Art Show in Grants Pass while Karen went to a workshop here. We also managed a jam to share our banjo jokes with him (they never stop!) The “5 O’Clock Jammers” played for the “Four Score and More” celebration for the oldsters (and others) at the church where we practice. Folks loved the old gospel songs and hymns, and sang along with gusto. Many nice comments. What fun folks had learning the Virginia Reel when we played for the Jacksonville Sesquicentennial in the old U.S. Hotel ballroom! All ages participated and there were smiles all around. Almost got caught in the thunderstorm when we played in Vogel Park in downtown Medford as part of the “Taste of History” celebration, but we played on as the signs were blowing down all around us! Looking forward to seeing folks from all over the state this summer – lots going on! And – “I don’t suffer from insanity — I enjoy every minute of it!” Judy McGarvey, District 4 Reporter _______________________ District 5 Chairman: Ruth Weyer 541-759-3419 Co-Chair: Pat Casey 541-756-0659 Secretary: Jolly Hibbits 541-347-2229 Treasurer: Mapril Combs 541-572-5532 Membership:Jolly Hibbits 541-347-2229 Reporter: Mary A. What an enthusiastic bunch of people all having a good time playing, singing and dancing. There were about 30 musicians in all for the circle jam and 15 or 16 members for the stage performance with lots of singing and several dancers out on the floor. There was a good-sized audience attending the performance and hoping it  would  be repeated soon. Tentative plans are to do this again in October. Those of you who didn’t go in May should plan to do so then. You missed a good time! The winning ticket for the raffle for two nights at the Edgewater Inn in Coos Bay was won by Ken Hooten when the ticket was drawn at the Brookings jam. Hope you enjoy your stay there, Ken. Guest musicians attending the May Jam in Winchester Bay included Lewis Roy, a past state president of OOTFA, from Roseburg, Hal Thompson from Glide and Mike Greydon from Reedsport. We enjoyed your music and singing, guys. We have several new members who have recently joined the District 5 group. These include Verna Lee from Coos Bay, Ann Bogner from Brookings, and Timothy Palmer and Norman Floyd from Reedsport. We welcome all of you and hope to see you often. Several of our members are gone this week  attending the jamboree and meeting in Burns and then will be going on to the national contest and meeting in Weiser, Idaho, next week. Our next big event will be the Winchester Bay Campout, August 20-23. I trust you have all been working on your acts following the theme of “Ocean or Sea”. That provides a wide area of choice and we expect to see some spectacular results. If everyone who said, last year, that they will be back this year, comes, we should have another large crowd. The coast is a popular place to visit in August. And they like us! It is said one out of four people in this country is unbalanced. Think of your three closest friends. If they seem okay, then you’re the one. Mary A. There is a show planned at the Ranch Art Gallery on Wednesday, the 17th, plus the merchants have set up another sidewalk event for Thursday, the 18th. Hope you all got to participate in one or more of these events before the Jamboree. At our jam at the Aspens on June 12, Ron Jahns brought his mandolin and joined us. Also a young girl, LaVelle Johnson, sang a song for us. She also plays the fiddle, but had injured her hand.  She does hope to have her hand well enough for the Jamboree workshops.  Ron Jahns is also planning an art exhibit of his paintings and a book signing of his “Kids on the Ranch” on Friday, June 26.  Dennis and Dona Townsend will be playing music for this event and Dona will also have some of her paintings on display. We’ve been busy. We also played another outdoor show at King’s Variety, Saturday, the 13th. We had just gotten our sound equipment back in the trailer when a cloud burst occurred. Later that same day, Ruel Teaque, Walt Cooper and Julia Milleson played at the dedication ceremony for the new community center in downtown Burns. Former Senator Bob Smith, whose folks previously owned the building, borrowed a harmonica and joined us on a few songs. Janet Braymen has made up a playing schedule for everyone in order to keep all the dates straight. It’s a huge help. Thanks Janet. Mickey and Joe Enneberg will host a jam on Saturday, July 4,  at their place near the golf course. This gives us a ringside seat for the fireworks. There will be no jam on Friday, July 3. There is a birthday party scheduled for Saturday, July 11,  at the Senior Center.  Fiddlers will play from 2 until 4 p.m.  Aspens will be July 10 at 7:00 p.m. and Ashley Manor,  Monday, July 20 at 6:30 p.m.  Hope you all have a great July 4. And, to the cleaner-uppers.– The jam went great, we had many players plus two guests, Bill Ganey from Grants Pass, and Lois Eagleton, a new fiddler from Tyee.–Chuck Hastey played, and it was so nice seeing Margie Hastey out and about.  She sure looks good, but is taking it easy. We need more fiddlers, so some of us are getting together to learn more on the fiddle, so we can play on stage.  If any of you play an acoustic instrument, or sing, come join us — we won’t bite, and will be glad to have you.
