Hello fiddlers and friends,
District 1E wishes you all the very best holiday season ever. Is that politically correct enough?
We didn’t have a district meeting this month, so I’m not sure exactly what’s going on gig-wise, but I’ll bet I’m safe in saying there’s not much. This is the slowest time of year……….
We played for the Sunshine Children’s Center fund raiser in December, as well as for the Holiday Fair and then a week later, the Holiday Bazaar.
Some of us played for the funeral of Ethel Parker. She and husband Bud were longtime members (audience members) of 1E and when they were both in good health, almost never missed a jam-great supporters of 1E.
Next jam will be on Jan. 2nd starting 4:00 p.m. at the Lake County Senior Center, and the next business meeting should be on Monday, Jan. 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the Lake County Senior Center.
Happy Birthday (again and again) to Ruth Grant-Couch on the 10th and Mahlon Couch on the 16th of January.
BTW, What do sheep say at Christmas time in Mexico? Fleece Navida- a- a -a -d !
See you next year ! Which reminds me-I’d better get my 2010 dues paid, or I won’t be seeing any of you! Eileen McLain

We had our regular Sunday Jam on December 6 at the Pine Forest Grange Hall. Attendance was very meager due to the severe weather conditions. Our annual Christmas Dinner and jam was a huge success. Too much good food and great music was enjoyed by all. We requested Santa Claus to show up at our Christmas dinner and he did. Pictures were taken of Santa with the kids.
Several members will be playing music at the Ochoco Assisted Living facility in Prineville at their request for the Christmas entertainment. This is free service provided as a community service.
Earline Ervin has been working hard to bring in dues for 2010. We have picked up a couple of new members in the process.
Our next scheduled jam will be on January 3rd at the Pine Forest Grange.
Happy New Year to all.

Roxy Ann Grange was the spot to be on a cold first Saturday in December. The turkey and ham feast with more “sides” than a fancy restaurant helped us celebrate the season with full tummies! Cathy Frutchey ably conducted the
business meeting. Ruth, Len, Marlene, and Roy were the lucky winners of the poinsettia door prizes. We had visitors Patty and Dan Casey from Oklahoma, as well as our “almost regular” visitors from Roseburg – Bob (and Jean) Hanson, Guy Kinman, and Hal (and Sharon)Thompson. Wow, they add a lot of good music to ourjams! We have a new member, Susan Haines from Alaska – and she fiddles! Welcome,Susan!
Everett Costa has been working with Andy Martin to have a twice-a-month jam atthe Great Northwest Music Company music store in Grants Pass. We’re hoping to find more musicians in Grants Pass to cover our gig requests there, and several are interested. Anyone is welcome to come and play or listen. Current schedule
is the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 6:00pm. Contact Everett or Shanna Burchell for more info.
Nine of our fiddlers turned violinist to play at the Feast of Carols OOMPA (Only Occasional Methodist Philharmonic Association) Orchestra at the Methodist Church in Medford. Also the fiddlers and several guitar players did a rousing version of “Frosty the Snowman”. We were all rewarded by the Feast of Cookies thatfollowed. By the way, do you know the difference between a violin and a fiddle?- a fiddle is a violin with friends!
We still need volunteers to fill the importantstaff positions in District 4, asour current officers are term limited to this year. Scott says they’ll be terminal in June.
As the new year approaches I guess we’re s’posed to think of those pesky
resolutions. I think I’ll just make a list of things to do – that I’ve alreadydone! Hope your holiday season is/was wonderful!

The featured musician for December was Charles Russell who lives in Bandon when he’s not out traveling around the world on his job. His musical interest began at about the age of 9 when an elderly neighbor taught him and two brothers next door how to play the ukulele. He moved on to guitar and singing and has been doing that for many years. After graduating from the Texas Maritime academy he has worked in many parts of the world and still does and takes his music with him. His first band was the “Crude Oil Cowboys” in Singapore where he was stationed for 12 years. It wasn’t until he moved to Oregon that he found old time music and became a member of The Oregon Old Time Fiddlers.
We had a couple extra play dates that weren’t listed on the calendar for December. These were on December 3 at the Reedsport Senior Center where they reportedly enjoyed the music very much and wanted to know when we’d be back, and on December 12 at the Arts and Crafts Club Christmas potluck in Florence.
The holiday dinner, which took place before the November jam in Winchester Bay, was well attended and much enjoyed with all the usual good food and comradeship.
The next quarterly meeting will be held at Emerald Park in Eugene on January 9 and will be hosted by District 6. Let’s all go and enjoy the music, which starts at 10:00 a.m. following the board meeting at 9:00 a.m. There will be a potluck lunch at noon.
Our madam chairlady and champion huntress, Ruth Weyer, has been at it again. Last Saturday, December 12, she bagged a nice elk while hunting with a muzzle loader gun. Congratulations! Way to go, Ruth.
Bestwishes to all those with birthdays this month and may all of you not feeling up to par soon be back feeling fit as a fiddle.
Hope each of you has the best New Year ever.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from D7. Even though the weather was chancy, we had a good good number of OOTFA members turn out for the holiday party at the Estacada Community Center. The food and the music were both wonderful and plentiful! Lots of holiday cheer all around. A number of young fiddlers were there and did a terrific job. When Tabitha Gholi played “Sunrise on the Guinea Farm”, four little “Guineas” flapped their “wings” and strutted around her. The future of fiddling in the state of Oregon is in very good hands. We can all be on the look out for potential scholarship recipients. We can do a lot to help people increase the value of their ives with music.
Be sure to save some of that holiday cheer for welcoming our newest member, Brenda Hagins from Rainier, Oregon.
Please note: Beginning in January 2010, the scheduler for District 7 will be Ron Zabudsky, 503-630-6542 or rdzinstruments@msn.com. The current scheduler has been doing it for a long time and needs a change. Ron volunteered to take it over, so “Thank you, Ron”!
Sunday January 17, 2010 we will be at the Gladstone Senior Center at 1050 Portland Avenue in Gladstone from 11:00 to 3:30-4:00. This is a fun one.
Sunday February 14, 2010 we will be at the Tualatin Senior Center at 8513 SW Tualatin Road. Celebrate Valentine’s Day and wear something red for your sweetheart!
Sunday March 14, 2010 we will be at the Lake Oswego Adult Center at 505 G Street in Lake Oswego. Since this is so near to St. Patrick’s Day, wear something green for your inner leprechaun!

February 20, Saturday Dist. 8 Jam McMinnville Sr. Center
Remember all the excitement and uncertainty of the turn of the century to 2000. Hardly seems like 10 years ago. Time flies!
Curly and Allison Robbers want to thank everyone who has send cards and prayers. They appreciate their friends very much. Others are on the mend too. The rest of you, Stay Healthy!
December 19th will have been our regular jam at the Adult Center in McMinnville. Hope many of you took some time off from the hectic holiday rush to have some fiddling fun.
Often we get paid to play for private groups, but we also play free as a community service for some organizations. A couple small groups played for Homeward Bound, a pet shelter program in McMinnville. We played at the thrift store that raises funds for the group. The volunteers at the store and the customers all seemed to enjoy the music. And yes, there was a pet there – a very friendly 3 legged dog.
Remember the OOTFA Quarterly meeting in Eugene on January 9th. These get togethers are a great time to meet and greet friends from other districts. See details in District 6 news.
Our regular January sign up jam is January 16th. Let’s make it a good first jam of the year. We’ll be at McMinnville Senior Center. Here’s how to get to the Senior Center. If you are traveling through McMinnville north on the main highway — after you have gone through the business district and start to go out of town, there will be a McDonald’s on the left (north side of the highway), right there you turn right (south) on to McDaniel St. to 2250 N.E. McDaniel Lane. and the Senior Center is a couple of blocks on the left. (east side). Open at 10am for setting up, informal jamming and practice. All OOTFA members welcome. We love visitors! About 10:30 Alice will conduct a “jam tunes” workshop and maybe teach a tune. You are invited to attend.
It’s time again to think about leadership for District 8. We’ll be having a meeting and electing new officers at our February 20th jam. Please consider accepting an office. We’ll need both a new chairman and co-chair, Lew and Darlene having each served for 2 years. Marie Bailey has agreed to be nominating committee chairperson. If you are interested or have suggestions, chat with her.
Quote: ‘WE is a more powerful word than I’. Together WE can make this a great year for OOTFA.

Before we get started on a great new year coming up we need to cover some other events. On Nov.14th Joan Suther’s folks Dan and Mutsy and Dan’s brother were here from California and Janet Braymen hosted a special jam at her place so we could play music with Dan. The day after Thanksgiving Don and Wilda Toussaint of Princeton held a jam at their place as Jim was here for the holiday. Sorry I missed that jam but I was spending the holiday in Milton-Freewater with my kids.
Before our jam night at the Aspens on Dec. 11th we were invited to their Christmas potluck dinner and after the meal and the staffs visit with Santa we finished up the evening playing music.
On Sunday 13th we had our holiday jam with turkey dinner and a surprise birthday cake—–for none other than yours truly! Everyone put on name tags that read “I’m not Julia and then Mickey Enneberg presented me with a corsage with a Julia ribbon on it and said I was the birthday girl [?] I thought the occasion was for associate member Anna Sloan who was also feted with “Happy Birthday” as well as Mary Ausmus {13th} and Dennis Townsend who had a birthday on the 11th. What a wonderful surprise! Learned my sister Lynn had talked to Mickey and Mickey got with Dona Townsend and I don’t where they got the great big humorous card but they’d been collecting signatures for a while. When the poinsettia plants were given away for door prizes Andrew Dunderdale {our Jamboree soundman} was a lucky winner and gave his plant to me. A great day that I’ll remember for a long time. Thanks everyone!
Betty Chapman of Christmas Valley was a guest musician and did one of her yodeling songs, which is always a crowd pleaser. Joan Suther has missed all our holiday fun as she is off in Ecuador again. We had several new people in the crowd and learned one lady plays guitar and sings so maybe we can coax her to come join our jams. We do have fun.
In January our Aspen play date is Friday Jan. 8th at 7:00 and Ashley Manor is Monday Jan. 18th at 6:30. Our next Senior Center potluck and jam is Sunday Jan. 10th. Potluck is at 1:00 with music to follow from 2:00 until 4:00 Come join us.
Rhea Bigelow has volunteered to put together memories from past Jamborees in celebration of our 20th anniversary. Using the theme “My Fiddling Thru Time” Rhea would like pictures and short write-ups of memories from past Country Music Jamborees to be presented at the Jamboree, June 17-19, 2010. Rhea will start this project in January and complete it by April. Mail memories to Rhea at 122 SE Cessna Drive. Bend, Oregon 97702 or e-mail to Halfpintbig 58@hotmail.com. Thanks.
Looking forward to a great New Year and lots of music playing

We had a very nice Christmas potluck and jam, lots of turkey, and all the trimmings, thanks to all the people who brought the good food, and thank you to the ladies that helped cleanup afterward. We didn’t have anyone from other districts today; the roads were pretty slick. But we had enough to have a very nice jam, we played and sang lots of Christmas songs, and others. More dancers this time.
It was nice to see Margie Hastey there today, she’s feeling better now.–Doris Dilbeck is recovering from her heart surgery. Whitey Kelm is recovering from his heart surgery too, he was there to listen and visit. Hope to see Doris and Don soon. Also, Bruce Werlinger (Shannon’s dad) was there, and hereally looks good, visiting and teasing, even though he is fighting terminal cancer, it was good seeing him out.
Well, we won’t be having our meeting and jam next month, January, because of the state meeting in Eugene on the same day.
Our next MEETING, potluck and jam will be held February 13th, 2010. We’ll be electing officer’s then. It will be held at the VFW hall on 1127 NE Walnut St. in Roseburg.
Happy Anniversary and Happy Birthday to all that had them, and by the time you read this, hope everyone had a nice Christmas, and it will be a New Year. Well anyway, Happy New Year!

President Jack: Wow I can’t believe that 2010 is here. I didn’t think I would ever see it. I hope all of you had a wonderful Holliday season. It is surprising how time goes by.
We will be meeting in Eugene soon to get things rolling for the remainder of the fiscal year. Of utmost importance is lining up a slate of officers to guide us through the coming year. Your executive board will be looking for candidates. If you or someone you know would be interested in serving in some capacity, President, Vice President or Sec/Treasurer, please inform your District President.
Every once in a while I get a call from one of our members who wants to discuss a program or an idea that is fresh or different. Just a few days ago I got a call from Virgil Schmoe. Virgil said that he has a pretty good student violin that he would be willing to donate to a worthy student with the understanding that the person would never sell it but would retain it in good condition and donate it to someone else if they obtained another instrument or ceased to have a need for it. The next person would agree to the same terms concerning the possession.
As we talked the idea of a program called “traveling strings” surfaced. Could we set up a program to furnish instruments for all deserving students through this concept? It would be interesting to track the movement of each of these instruments through the years. Think about it.
I look forward to seeing you in Eugene. Jack, president OOTFA

Those of you who have email know what I mean when I write, “OOTFA Updates.” For several years I have sent news to members with email telling of a death or serious illness or anything that the members might want to know. This last month I sent out several. One told of Maxine Benson, state president 1985 – 86, 1986- 87, being seriously ill in ICU. She is better now. Another OOTFA Update told of the passing of Susie Milligan. Her husband, Buck, was state president in 1984-85.
Our editor of the Hoedowner won’t have is column this month. He and his wife are in some far off distant land enjoying them selves.
Thanks to district 4 for their donation to the state fiddle contest. When ever a member passes away in District 4, they often donate $50.00 in that person’s memory.
Next August 14, 2010 will be Bob’s Huffman’s 90th birthday. Andy Jorgensen writes that “we will have the regular Bob Bash on that day. We are hoping to have at least 90 guests in attendance.” Andy wants everyone to mark it on his or her calendar and be sure to come?
