Junior Hoedowner
Volume 2, Issue 5
Greetings Junior Hoedowners,
It is “thank you” time. Let’s all thank Eileen Walter for meeting with you Friday at 6:00 p.m. and then being on stage with you from 6:30 to 7:00. Eileen sent the following report:
Bryce led Tennessee Waltz & Maggie
Summer led Pig Ankle Rag & Rabbit Where’s Your Mammy
Olga led Soldiers Joy
Brian led Faded Love & Ashokan Farewell
Bryce led Maggie & Tennessee Waltz
Rylee & Mandy led Boil the Cabbage
Victoria led Arkansas Traveler
Sara led Old Joe Clark
Melissa led Redwing
Julia led Cripple Creek
Trevor led Swallowtail Jig at the end
And then Trevor and Melissa played the Star Spangled Banner. At the end of the show Trevor played “The Orange Blossom Special.” A great round of applause!
Three of them led Aran Boat Song. One of them was Max, I think another one was Sara, and there was a third one, but I don’t remember who it was.
There were 19 kids on stage, ranging in age from 4 to 18 - their names are:
Olga, Louis, Raquel, Sofia, Rylee, Mandy, Max, Raymond, Brian, Bryce, Summer, Victoria, Julissa, Rosalie, Julia, Sara, Molly, Melissa, and Trevor.
Prior to going on stage I went around and got all their names and asked who wanted to lead a tune and which tune (or tunes) it was - and we were able to get all of them in. Those who didn’t lead tunes were those who said they just wanted to play along in the background. I was so glad we had time for everyone and didn’t have to leave anyone off.
The four who attended the workshop were: Harrison Broadus, Sara Wright, Julia Wright, and Rylee Johnson - Harrison is from Dallas and the other three from Independence. We worked on Back Up & Push, which was a lot to bite off for an hour - but Monday I sent them all a CD with the tune recorded fast and slow of a simpler and a fancier version, as well as the written music and tablature - so if they’re motivated, they’ll be able to do it - none of them were total beginners. I had planned on doing a simpler tune, but they didn’t seem too interested in that tune, and they really liked Back Up & Push, so we went for it and I showed them how to do “hokum” bowing. They were very attentive and worked very hard during the hour. “
Tune of the Month
Kathlene is the tune this month. Let me tell you how this tune got to the Northwest. Years ago I bought an old fiddle at an auction in Seattle. I bought it because it had a village on the back of it. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dgstuart/gs56.htm for the full story. Many people wrote to me about the fiddle being returned to the family that had lost it 60 years earlier. I continued to write to two men – one in Scotland and one in New York. I still write to Willie in Scotland but Dewey in NY has died. Before he died, he and I exchanged videos. One of his videos had a special tune that caught my attention. It was Kathleen. Alice has taught it in workshops and it has become a tune that many people all over Oregon play. Maybe you will enjoy it, too. Lew
